Iš kiekvienų 100 € Lietuvoje maistui tenka 19,7 €.Out of every €100 in Lithuania, €19.7 goes to food.

Eurostat HICP svoriai rodo, kokią vartojimo krepšelio dalį sudaro maistas. Lietuvoje tai 6-a didžiausia dalis ES (vidurkis — 16,3 %). Airijoje ar Austrijoje — apie 10 %. Kodėl tokia skirtis ir ką ji reiškia, kai kainos kyla?Eurostat HICP weights show what share of the consumer basket goes to food. In Lithuania it is the 6th-largest in the EU (average 16.3%). In Ireland or Austria it is about 10%. Why the gap, and what it means when prices rise?

Pirmame tyrime parodėme, kad Lietuvoje maisto kainų lygis beveik lygus ES vidurkiui, o viskas kita — gerokai pigiau. Čia pridedame antrą pusę: kiek iš viso išleidžiamo euro iš tikrųjų atitenka maistui. Our first study showed that Lithuania's food price level is almost the EU average while everything else is much cheaper. Here we add the other half: how much of every euro actually goes to food.

Svoriai — ne apklausa, o oficialus Eurostat skaičius: jais sveriamas kiekvienos šalies infliacijos indeksas (HICP). Rodo, kokia dalis namų ūkių vartojimo išlaidų tenka maistui (be nealkoholinių gėrimų).Weights are not a survey but an official Eurostat figure: they weight each country's inflation index (HICP). They show what share of household consumption spending goes to food (excluding non-alcoholic drinks).

Dvigubas spaudimasThe double squeeze

A large food share is a risk when food is also relatively expensive. We combined both dimensions: horizontally, food prices relative to the whole basket (from our first study); vertically, the food share of the basket. The top-right corner holds countries where food is both pricey and weighty.

Latvija, Lietuva, Bulgarija ir Kroatija patenka į vieną grupę: maistas čia santykinai brangus ir sudaro didelę krepšelio dalį. Estija ir Lenkija — arčiau vidurio. Vakarų Europoje (NL, DE, AT, IE) maistas ir santykinai pigesnis, ir sudaro mažesnę išlaidų dalį.Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Croatia sit together: food is both relatively dear and a large part of the basket. Estonia and Poland are closer to the middle. In Western Europe (NL, DE, AT, IE) food is both cheaper and a smaller share. ŠaltiniaiSources: [1], [2]. KodėlWhy

Kodėl tokia skirtis ir ką ji reiškiaWhy the gap, and what it means

  1. PajamosIncomesKuo mažesnės pajamos, tuo didesnė maisto dalis — maistui negalima „neišleisti“. Tai seniai žinomas Engelio dėsnis. Todėl Rytų ir Pietryčių Europa viršuje. The lower the income, the larger the food share — food cannot be skipped. This is the long-known Engel's law, which is why Eastern and South-Eastern Europe sit at the top.
  2. Kainos kyla — skausmas didesnisPrices rise — the pain is biggerKai maistui tenka apie 20 % išlaidų, 10 % maisto kainų šuolis prideda maždaug 2 procentinius punktus prie bendros infliacijos, o Airijoje — apie 1. Todėl toks pat kainų šuolis Baltijos šalyse jaučiamas skaudžiau. When food is ~20% of spending, a 10% rise in food prices adds about 2 points to overall inflation versus about 1 in Ireland. The same price jump hurts more in the Baltics.
  3. Svarbu kiekviena parduotuvėEvery shop choice countsJei maistui skiriamas penktadalis išlaidų, 5 % sutaupymas pasirinkus pigesnį tinklą sudaro apie 1 % viso biudžeto. Tam ir lyginame kainas. If a fifth of the budget is food, a 5% saving from choosing a cheaper chain is ~1% of the whole budget. That is what price comparison is for.

Kaip skaičiavome ir ko neteigiameHow we calculated, and what we do not claim

PLI).Weights (prc_hicp_inw, COICOP CP011) are given in per mille of the total HICP basket; we divided by 10 to get percentages. The "food ÷ whole basket" ratio comes from the first study (2024 PLI).

Ribos.Limits. (3) „Maistas“ čia — be nealkoholinių gėrimų. (4) Skirtinga 2024 (kainos) ir 2025 (svoriai) metų bazė — tendencija, o ne tikslus palyginimas.(1) HICP weights cover only spending within HICP scope and change every year — shares can differ from national accounts. (2) This is a national average: low-income households spend a larger share. (3) "Food" here excludes non-alcoholic drinks. (4) Price data are 2024 and weights 2025 — a pattern, not an exact comparison.
